Anika Moa has teamed up with Mazda New Zealand as the company's first brand ambassador.

Moa is one of the country's leading musicians with four studio albums under her belt along with multiple New Zealand Music Award wins and Apra Silver Scroll nominations.

"I'm really excited to be a Mazda ambassador," says Moa. "The company supported my Solo Tour in 2010 with a CX-7. I loved the car, it's got plenty of room for my gear when I'm on the road and I can't wait to get behind the wheel again."

Andrew Clearwater, Managing Director of Mazda New Zealand, says the company has developed a strong relationship with the artist and is delighted to have her on board.

"We've worked closely with Anika over the past few years and are happy to formally welcome her to the Mazda family and support her busy programme as one of New Zealand's hardest-working singer-songwriters," says Clearwater.

Mazda's relationship with the artist began when she was named Mazda Best Female Solo Artist at both the 2008 and 2010 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards.

Moa will drive Mazda's CX-7 crossover which is renowned for its blend of sports car performance with SUV practicality.

Fans will be able to see her out and about in her Sparkling Black CX-7 as she embarks on her Autumn tour. For more information on the tour, visit www.anikamoa.com.

  • Third helicopter purchase an investment in Northland growth

Third helicopter purchase an investment in Northland growth

    Thursday, 31 March 2011

Northland Emergency Services Trust (NEST) announced today the purchase of a third helicopter to help service its Northland operations.

The purchase is significant for emergency services in the region, with Northland's steady population growth over recent years putting increased pressure on the capacity of organisations such as NEST to provide comprehensive coverage.

The investment is welcome news for local medical professionals and residents of Northland communities, 11,500 of whom have used the service since its inception in 1988.

Garry Ware, CEO of the Whangaroa Health Services Trust, says the addition of a third helicopter is essential in a region where remote townships struggle for direct access to quality medical care.

"The North has a large number of isolated communities that rely heavily on the services NEST provides to maintain connections to major hospitals, with access by road in excess of a several hours for some regions " says Ware.

"For those travelling in one of NEST's helicopters the level of need is almost always high and time is of the essence. Put simply, the service increases the chance of our people staying alive. Adding to that resource to ensure complete coverage for our region can only be a positive," he says.

The move follows the three helicopter precedent set by Otago which, along with Northland, has the highest workload of the rescue services nationally.

NEST Chairman John Bain says the addition of the new helicopter was essential in ensuring rescue services and medical transfers can continue to keep pace with demand.

"Civil aviation requirements state that each of our helicopters must undergo a full inspection every 300 flight hours with each of those inspections lasting around five weeks. With the rapid growth in Northland driving up the number of call outs, we are reaching this 300 hour mark increasingly quickly," he says.

"While the grounding and inspection of these helicopters is carefully scheduled by the Trust, not having a backup helicopter at all times in such an expansive area is certainly not ideal."

The new Sikorsky S76 helicopter will go some way to alleviating the demand caused by the increase in flight hours and will also introduce a second winch - a much needed resource for rescue operations. Currently Northland goes without a winch service during inspection periods.

Along with improving rescue services to Northland, the additional helicopter will benefit other North Island services with a backup helicopter when required. During times when all three aircrafts are operational, one will also be made available for the Advanced Pilot Training Programme at Ardmore where training is focused on up-skilling pilots in a vocation which is steadily in decline. The revenue generated from this will further offset operating costs for a third helicopter, ensuring local residents in Northland communities will not wear the cost.

  • Aces take out HRV Cup

    Aces take out HRV Cup

    Friday, 14 January 2011

Auckland Aces are the new HRV Cup champions after brilliantly evicting defending champions Central Stags with an inspired display of bowling and fielding today's final. Auckland, who won the toss and decided to bat first, posted a barely competitive score of 158 for eight but fought tooth and nail in the field to deny Central Districts by four runs.

While Central Districts dropped two easy catches through Ian Blackwell and Ross Taylor, Auckland fielded with venom and took every chance with Roneel Hira and Lou Vincent outstanding.

Auckland were two for 20 after swinging deliveries from Central medium pacer Doug Bracewell snared the key wickets of Martin Guptill and Lou Vincent who both departed after scoring four runs each.

Guptill drove hard at a full delivery and edged the ball to Ross Taylor at slip, then Vincent lofted a ball to Kieran Noema-Barnett at long-on. Jimmy Adams and Colin de Grandhomme then steadied the innings with a stand of 66 for the third wicket.

Jimmy Adams departed for 66 off 43 balls when he tried to hit spinner Ian Blackwell out of the park only to be caught by Jacob Oram at long off just after getting a life when he was dropped by Taylor.

But a 29 from Colin Munro, off 18 balls, helped Auckland top their score of 158 for eight.

The Stags were a shadow of the side that had beaten Auckland by eight wickets in the last match of the preliminary round last Wednesday to make today's final.

The wind was taken out of their sails in just the first over of their innings. Left arm medium pacer Michael Bates snared three wickets in the space of five balls to have Central rocked back on their heels at none for three.

Bates had Peter Ingram slashing wildly at his first delivery to be caught by Colin Munro at third man, Jamie How was caught by Vincent at slip with his third ball and then was on a hat-trick after dismissing Blackwell via a brilliant diving catch by Hira.

Taylor and Michael Yardy put on 51 runs for the fourth wicket before Yardy went for 21. Jacob Oram lasted but four balls for his two runs and a punch-drunk Central Districts were unable to break the shackles.

There was some lusty hitting by Kieran Noema-Barnett and Kruger van Wyk in the lower order but the damage caused by Bates' triple wicket maiden at the top of the innings was too much to repair despite a stand of 50 between van Wyk and Bracewell for the eighth wicket.
